Quinta das Netas
Olive Oil

Our olive trees are planted around the borders of our vineyards as well as in our olive groves. Many of our trees are well over 100 years old and produce 100% natural and delicious extra-virgin olive oil

Douro Valley

On the right is our home, Quinta das Netas, which is situated in the Douro in northern Portugal. It is one of the world’s most wild and beautiful wine regions and its steeply terraced vineyards are surrounded by olive trees that produce an intense and characterful olive oil.

The valley has remarkable schist soils and a unique climate that is strongly influenced by the 1,400-metre-high Serra do Marão on its western border.  Long famous for the great Port and the wonderful Douro red and white wines, this region also produces magnificent olive oil.

The Family and Property

Paul and Jane Symington, from a family that has farmed vineyards in the Douro since the 19th century, own the 46-hectare Quinta das Netas high up on the valley side of the Rio Pinhão, a tributary of the Douro river. While many of the regions’ vineyards are relatively low-lying, the Netas vineyard is between 380 and 570 meters above sea level. This location has a profound impact on the estate’s wines and on its olive oil, giving a lively freshness and fine acidity to both. During the very hot Douro summers Netas remains relatively cool and the olive trees and the vines are happier as a result.

There are 2,021 olive trees of considerable age at Quinta das Netas. All these olive trees are organically farmed and the olives are hand-picked.

Our Olive oil

Flavours

This is a full bodied olive oil with aromas of freshly picked olives, plenty of aromatic herbaceous notes, cinnamon, and dried fruits. Our olive oil is balanced with a touch of sweetness and slight bitterness showing peppery and spicy flavours, with a long and elegant aftertaste. These distinct flavours are typical of the Douro region.

Production

For the production of this unique Olive Oil, the olives are harvested by hand and cold extraction is performed to ensure the true natural flavor of the oil.

Location

Our Quinta is located between 380 and 570 meters above sea level, so our olive trees benefit from cool nights, even in the hot Douro summers. This significantly enhances the flavours of our olive oil.

Varietals

Galega is a 100% indigenous Portuguese varietal. It brings the smoothness to our olive oil, with green fruit flavours and almond notes. Madural is one of the rarest varieties of olives produced in Portugal bringing a unique flavour of fresh fruit, almond with bitter and spice. Cordovil is very fine, with intense characteristics of fruity, accentuated green leaves, medium bitterness and spice.

To serve

Due to its fine acidity and high quality our olive oil is ideal for seasoning salads and Mediterranean style cuisine. It is also excellent on it's own with a slice of sourdough bread.

Our Trees

Many of our stunning olive trees are well over 100 years old and are spread out across the Quinta, lining the vineyards and sitting amongst them. With three dedicated olive groves preserving these Portuguese varietals.
